Our local Richmond Kickers' play throughout the summer, and their games are really fun! They have concessions and local food trucks like Chick-Fil-A, Kona Ice + Dippin' Dots and Cary Street Cafe food truck. We really enjoyed arriving early, getting a free hat, having a picnic and watching the game - there was so much for the kids to see.

The Red Army, the most loyal fans, have flags, red smoke and drums - my kids loved watching them cheer on the team!

If you purchase your tickets before the day of the match, they are $15. Children 4 and under are free. Another bonus is that the stadium seats are completely shaded in the evening!

Why I like this park for kids: The highlight of this park, especially in the summer, is the 40-acre lake with a boat launch, fishing pier, boat rentals & swimming! It also has playgrounds on the beach. This makes playing at both the playground and in the water really easy with kids.

17. Visit the only drive-in theater in Richmond!

Goochland Drive In Theatre: Located in Hadensville, this drive-in theater has been open since 2009. The venue is pet friendly, they have restrooms, and they have an affordable concessions stand. Movies are rain or shine, and most of the nights have double features. Gates typically open around 6/6:30 on movie nights with movies beginning around 8pm.

Tickets cost between $18-$25 per vehicle, and all tickets must be purchased ahead of time from Goochland Drive-In Theater's website. I like this theater for families because it is not as expensive as a trip to the regular movie theaters, too!

18. Play at the beach.

Located in Virginia Beach, First Landing State Park is the most visited state park in Virginia! It has over 20 miles of trails & 1.5 miles of beach front. This state park also has a lot of history - it’s the location where the first English colonist landed in 1607. Legend also has it that Blackbeard (the pirate) hid in the Narrows area of the park. The park was built in part by an all African American Conservation Corps between 1933-1940.

Why I like this park for kids: It has really easy beach access, and with parking costing $7 on weekdays and $10 on weekends, it’s cheaper than most VB oceanfront day parking options. The waves are very small, making it kid friendly (it’s on the Chesapeake Bay). We used a stroller from the car to the beach (just leaving it on the boardwalk).

Driving Distance: 2h, 22m (a little more than 2 hours, but it's worth it!)

Cost: $7 parking

When to Visit: all year

These flat bottom boats float in 3 feet to 15 feet of water by the Capital Trail, tobacco warehouses & the Low Line gardens. In addition to the historical narration, you can see river wildlife like otters, herons, and turtles. You will also pass by the Triple Crossing railroad tracks.

20. Eat Ice Cream.

Bruster's Real Ice Cream: Kids under 40" receive a free ice cream every day! The participating Bruster's locations are on Hull Street, on Robious Road, and on Staples Mill. The two Midlothian locations have outdoor play spaces with sand play & yard games.

Gelati Celesti is a locally-owned ice cream shop that serves heavenly handmade ice cream! This Virginia based ice cream company has 24 house favorites & over 100 flavors that rotate seasonally.

21. Go summer tubing.

Liberty Mountain SnowFlex: This mountain top rec center has ski slopes, mountain tubing & a sledding hill. The mountain is covered in Snowflex - a special surface that’s slippy & grippy, essential for snow sports, plus it’s soft to fall on (no hard ice or packed snow)! All ages are welcome & you can even schedule a beginner lesson for any of the snow sports. The views from Liberty Mountain are gorgeous too!

22. Visit a Library.

No matter which county or city you are a resident, you can visit other area's libraries for free too! Also, City of Richmond Public Libraries, Henrico County Libraries and Chesterfield Public Libraries all allow other residents to get a library card.

Here are 5 of the best libraries for children around Richmond:

  1. Ashland Library: If your children are 6 & younger, this is a must visit library because of the trains! The children's section has a large train table, and you have a perfect view of the real trains that come through Ashland.

  2. Fairfield Library: Opening in October 2019, Fairfield Library is one of the newest libraries around RVA. This 44,000+ square foot library is a building for all ages. This modern & spacious library has 2 levels with over 54,000 books, 100 public computers & plenty of meeting & study rooms!

The highlight for families is the gorgeous children’s area with an Everbright, kitchen playset, reading nooks & movement activities on the floor. The library’s thoughtful design even has a central sitting area between the children’s & teen areas — perfect for parents to see both areas.

  3. Midlothian Library: This 25,000 square foot space includes an outdoor reading garden, gathering spaces for teens, unique seating like pods, a digital media center, and a 3D printer!

The Children’s Area is thoughtfully designed for both caregivers & kiddos. It has a LEGO table & wall, a playhouse that changes themes (currently a snowman cafe) & play tables with toys. You will also find an outdoor classroom for families to enjoy. This fenced-in outdoor space has large musical instruments, climbing structures & a learning circle for children’s programs. It has sections with shade & full sun… and lots of space to get the wiggles out!

  4. Varina Library: This Henrico library spans 43,885 square feet on 22 acres! Resembling old tobacco barns, its 3 pavilions overlook the forest & wetlands. Inside you’ll find a large open space for gatherings, a Reading Landing & expansive windows. It also has reading terraces outside overlooking the forest. The view is especially spectacular when the leaves change.

The highlight for families are the Children’s Area & paved nature trail! The Children’s Area has a play food truck, mailboxes & movement activities on the floor around the entire area. It also has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the forest. The outside nature trail has paved paths around the library!

  5. James City County Library: This library is located in Williamsburg, and it was voted Best Library Virginia in 2023. The children's section looks more like a children's museum than a library!

23. Pick your own fruit.

Over the summer in Virginia, you can pick your own strawberries (late May), cherries (May-June), blueberries (June), and peaches (June to August). Here are two peach orchards to check out:

Chiles Peach Orchard: Owned by the Chiles family, this orchard & market has pick your own peaches & apples, pumpkins, flowers and berries! Chiles Peach Orchard also has a treat shop, an outdoor patio & open air market.

I love this orchard because it’s so easy to walk with kids. It’s in the valley, so the terrain is flat & you have views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Chiles Peach Orchard even has wagons for you to borrow while you pick.

*Check here for more details on Chiles Peach Orchard.

Hanover Peaches: Located in Mechanicsville, Hanover Peaches is about 30 minutes from Short Pump. This family-owned orchard is 20 acres. They grow peaches and nectarines in the summer and apples in the fall. You can find farm updates on their Facebook page.

While the complete trail is 31 miles, you can jump on the trail at Camp Paradise. It’s just .3miles from the bridge.

I love this hike for families, especially with young children. The paths are wide & flat. It’s completely stroller friendly! You can also ride bikes, scooters or horses. A new visitor center is being built at Camp Paradise too. The 2,600 square-foot trail center will resemble a 1900s train station with exhibits & an ADA-accessible path to the trail!

28. Ride a Boat.

Jamestown VDOT Ferry: Jamestown-Scotland Ferry is located between the Jamestown Settlement & Jamestown Beach. It’s free to ride this ferry, and it takes about 30 minutes to cross the James River. Chippokes State Park is in Surry, less than 10 minutes from the ferry’s dock.

29. Ride a BMX Bike Course.

Deep Run has a pond, 3.4 miles of paved trails, two separate playgrounds, picnic shelters, a basketball court, soccer fields, and multiple open spaces. It also has the first pump track in central Virginia.

Anyone can maneuver the course regardless of age or skill level. I’ve seen children 2-3 years old on balance bikes riding the course. You’re supposed to shift your body weight (*pumping*) to propel yourself through the course.

*Check here for more in Deep Run's BMX Track.

*If your kiddo is too young for a bike course, try biking Midlothian Mines Park. The trails are paved and there's a lot of shade. Check here for 7 kid-friendly bike trails around Richmond, Virignia.

30. Hike across the James River.

Tyler Potterfield Bridge: Completed in 2016, this pedestrian & cycling bridge connects Brown’s Island to Manchester. It’s 1,600 feet long with gorgeous views of the city & the river. This is one of our favorite places to walk by the river because of the views & the other areas nearby like Brown’s Island, Tredegar Ironworks , Virginia War Memorial & The Canal Walk.

*For more details on kid-friendly walks by the James River, check out my guide.

31. Create something.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts hosts a free open studio on the first Sunday of each month. Open Studio Sunday is from noon to 3pm, and your whole family can participate in an art activity inspired by an object in the VMFA collect. The art activity is new each month, and the program is led by VMFA Youth Studio Staff.

This is a free event, and no registration is required. Children 13 and younger must be accompanied by a grownup.

Open Studio Sunday is on June 1, July 6, August 3, and September 7, 2025.

*Check here for more information about Open Studo Sundays.

32. Watch Fireworks:

The Richmond Flying Squirrels host 25 fireworks shows every Thursdays and Saturday nights over the summer. You can watch them from inside The Diamond or around the area.

Fireworks are on every Thursday and Saturday night after the games (usually around 9ish). You can also watch fireworks on July 2 & 3.

33. Visit with Dinosaurs!

Ultimate Dinosaurs is on display at The Science Museum of Virginia May 31 to September 1, 2025. With 17 full specimens, interactive activities and augmented reality, this special exhibit brings these prehistoric predators to life!

We love visiting The Science Museum. There are four floors of interactive exhibits on the massive 33 acre property! It has plenty of space to move around, and it's fun with a group of all ages. Our favorite exhibits are The Animal Lab, The Speed Exhibit, The Boost Exhibit and The Light Place.

Hours: It’s open from 9:30-5 daily, and there are extended hours from 5-8 on Thursdays & Fridays.

34. Have a picnic.

Libby Hill Park: One of the original parks in Richmond, Libby Hill park is lovated at 28th and East Franklin Street. This park has one of the best views in Richmond - it is said that it looks very similar to Richmond on the Thames in England.

The VMFA's Sculpture Garden: The Claiborne & Lora Robins Sculpture Garden is a 3.5 acre garden, and it is part of the Richmond Garden Trail . It has green space, blooms, waterfalls & paths. The garden has large trees and tables with umbrellas that provide shade. It’s one of only 8 museums to have a permanent work by Chihuly!

Agecroft Hall and Gardens: This 16th century mansion was originally built in Lancashire, England. In 1925 it was dismantled & shipped across the Atlantic. Now in Windsor Farms, Agecroft Hall overlooks the James River and the railroad tracks, and it's surrounded by intricate gardens. As a part of the RVA Garden Trail, it’s the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic or to explore the beautiful green space.

35. See a waterfall.

Beaver Lake Trail: Located inside Pocahontas State Park, Beaver Lake Trail goes 2.5 miles around Beaver Lake. While it’s rated a moderate hike, we make it kid-friendly & stroller friendly by starting at the CCC Museum, walking down the gravel incline, going around the dam & connecting to the paved trail that goes back up to the CCC Museum.

The best part? It will only take ~5 minutes with kids to reach the water fall! Make it even easier by going back up the hill instead of trying our loop (~an hour).

*Check here for my review of Beaver Lake Trail.

36. Visit an island.

Did you know you can visit an island in Richmond? Okay, so these aren't technically islands, but they are Richmond "islands."

Brown's Island: Spanning 6 acres, this riverfront park is the perfect spot to picnic, runaround, or stroll. The trail around the park connects to the Canal Walk, and you can access the Potterfield Bridge too.

Belle Isle: A part of the James River Park System, the Belle Isle Trails are relatively easy hiking paths with scenic views and river access. These trails total 1.5 miles around Belle Isle & are perfect for strollers, bikes and scooters. One of the popular ways to access this trail is by crossing the pedestrian suspension bridge under the Lee Bridge. The bridge offers gorgeous views of the city, the railway & the river. There’s even a dirt bike park once you cross the bridge!

37. Go Roller Skating.

Skate-a-Way: Located in Midlothian, this roller skating rink offers open skate times, roller skating lessons and classes! We tried Tiny Tots Skating, and my littles LOVED it. During class, you get to free skate, have a skating lesson, dance to kid-friendly songs & classics, run around the rink & you get a ice pop! Class costs $7 per child, and it’s a really fun hour & 15 minute activity with toddlers & preschoolers. Older children can join in too - we had all ages in our class.

Hours: Tiny Tots is every Thursday from 10-11:15. Open skating is on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30, Friday 7:30-10:30, Saturday from 1-4, and Sundays from 2-4:30. Family Night is every Saturday from 7:30-10:30pm.
