7 Activities for Kids South of Richmond

Looking for things to do with your family around Richmond, Virginia? You need to check out the Tri-Cities of Virginia! The Tri-Cities are located on the Appomattox River, just 25 miles south of Richmond. Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights create the Tri-Cities of Virginia along with portions of Chesterfield county, Dinwiddie County and Prince George County. And theses cities and counties have plenty of options for the whole family to enjoy!


Here are 7 places and experiences to try with kids in the tri cities of Virginia!


The Best Things to do with kids south of RVA:


1. Tree Time Adventures: Tree Time Adventures is an outdoor aerial obstacle course. It has 4 tree top courses that take you on ~2-3 hour tour through the tree canopy. There is even a course for beginners & children as young as 3 years old. With almost 60 obstacle bridges, 8 zip lines, axe throwing & 2 nature trails, this adventure park has the *MOST* activities for all ages in RVA.


We recently tried The Thorn, the low ropes course. It’s specially designed for little kids & those with a fear of heights. My (almost) 4 year old & 5.5 year old *LOVED* their thrilling climb almost as much as they loved the zip line. We got to climb the course & ride the zip line as much as we wanted during our 2.5 hour visit.

Cost: It costs $39 per child (Ages 14 and Below) & $49 per adult for 2.5 hours.

2. Swaders Sports Park: This sports park has everything! @swaderssportsparkplaytime has outside attractions like 2 professionally designed 18-hole mini golf courses, a driving range, batting cages & 2 go kart tracks. It also has 70+ arcade games, duckpin bowling, and 5,800 square feet of laser tag with obstacles on multi levels. The highlight for younger kids is the Kid Zone - an indoor play area with obstacles, slides & more. Swaders Sports Park also host birthday parties!


Location: Prince George County, Virginia

Cost: There’s no coverage charge - you pay per activity you want to do. Members of the military can get 10% off every day. It costs $9 per person for laser tag, go karts, putt putt & the KidZone. Kids 3 & under can play in the KidZone & putt putt for half price ($4.50).

3. The Perfect Picks Flower Farm: Open since 2021, this family-owned flower farm has 10 acres of blooms! You can pick your own zinnia, cosmo, daisies, celosia, sunflowers & wildflowers. This month is *peak* bloom, so add The Perfect Picks Flower Farm to your July calendar. Sunflowers will continue to bloom is stages through the summer. The Perfect Picks Flower Farm will also be open this fall for PYO sunflowers, zinnias & pumpkins!


Location: Prince George County, Virginia

Cost: It’s $22 for *all you can pick* per adult. If you pay with cash, it’s $20. Ages 11 and under are free with a paid adult. Kiddos can help their grownup fill a bucket.

4. The Red Barn Farm: Located in Dinwiddie County, The Red Barn Farm is a historical farm that has family farm tours, offers summer camps for 6-11 year olds, and hosts birthday parties & field trips. We participated in the family farm tour & it was so much fun! The tour is interactive & great for all ages. The rescue animals at the farm are: geese, turkeys, pigs, chickens, emus, miniature ponies, a donkey, cows & goats. There are over 197 animals!⁣⁣


Location: Dinwiddie County, Virginia

Cost: It costs $8 a person & feed buckets are $5 each. ⁣⁣

5. Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum: This truck & tractor museum is so much fun for tractor lovers & history buffs. There are over 200 trucks & tractors on display, a toy shop & a restaurant. The museum also hosts birthday & special events. This is the perfect place to visit on cold days, hot days or rainy days in Richmond!


Location: Colonial Heights, Virginia

Cost: Admission costs $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $5 for active military + students (6-17) & children under 5 are free.

6. White Bank Park: Located in Colonial Heights, this 22 acre park has beautiful views on Swift Creek. It has boat ramps, a frisbee golf course, sand volleyball courts, open green space & an all inclusive playground. The Maddie Mann Foundation playground is barrier free with ADA surface, ramps, slides and swings.

7. Price George County Farmers Market: Every Saturday from May through October, Prince George Farmers Market meets at Scott Pavilion Park. The park and playground are adjacent to the Prince George Library. You can enjoy live music, play yard games, shop from local vendors & food trucks. We picked up BBQ sauce from B&B Culinary, flowers & cookies from Silver Oak Farms & baked goods from Mrs. Smith’s Sweets & Treats.


Prince George Farmers’ Market participates in Virginia Fresh Match. This program allows guests to use their EBT card and get half off on fruits and vegetables.


Upcoming Events:

1) First Responders Day is on Saturday, September 9 from 9am-1pm. There will be activities all day & all First Responders will be honored.

2) A special Holiday Market will be held on November 18, 2023 from 10am-2pm.
