The Virginia Museum of History & Culture kicking off the nation's celebration of America's 250th anniversary with a unique, immersive event called IllumiNATION. This special event is this week: Thursday, June 25 through Sunday, June 28, 2026.

Here's what you need to know about Virginia Museum of History and Culture's IllumiNATION:
The Virginia Museum of History & Culture will unveil VMHC IllumiNATION, a breathtaking video art projection that brings the American story to life, with 4 showings this week!
Over the course of 4 days, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture will turn into a festive block-party with popular local bands and pyrotechnics, art displays, cultural demonstrations, community group exhibitors, and crafts and games for the whole family.
There’s also special family-friendly programming, including: bounce house, petting zoo, and art-themed partner tables w/ activities!
What is IllumiNATION?
Virginia Museum of History and Culture's IllumiNATION is a free community event designed to bring history to life right here in Richmond! And since Virginia played such a pivotal role in America's founding, this is the perfect spot to reflect on our nation's history and future!
Virginia Museum of History and Culture's entire property -- inside the museum and outside the museum -- will come alive with music from local bands, art displays, cultural demonstrations, group exhibits, and crafts and games for the whole family.
The highlight of IllumiNATION is the immersive video art projection that plays nightly from 9-9:30pm. This video art projection will be displayed on the outside of the Virginia Museum of History and Culture's building. It takes you through the history of The United States of America with visuals, music, and pyrotechnics.
I attended the media preview last week, and the video is incredibly moving and entertaining -- all ages will enjoy it!
What activities and exhibits will be at IllumiNATION?
The Virginia Museum of History and Culture is hosting special events and activities from 6pm to 9:30pm on June 25 to June 28.
You can enjoy special after-hours access to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture's galleries and exhibits. You can also experience immersive storytelling, live music from Bio Ritmo and No BS! Brass, and live performances by Virginia Tribal Dancers and more!
Is IllumiNATION family-friendly?
Yes, IllumiNATION is designed for families and guests of all ages. In addition to all the other activities and performances, The Virginia Museum of History and Culture will also have special activities just for children:

Will food and beverages be available at IllumiNATION?
Yes, Virginia Museum of History and Culture is hosting a bunch of Richmond food trucks and RVA breweries during the 4-day event. While you can bring your own food and beverages, you can also order items from:

More Important Details on IllumiNATION:
The event is free to attend -- no ticket needed. To help the Virginia Museum of History and Culture prep for the crowd, you can pre-register here!
The VMHC’s parking lot will not be open to public parking (including VMHC members) during the event. The VMHC parking lot will close to the public at 5:00 pm on June 25, 26, 27, and 28.
Exclusive IllumiNATION parking in the VMHC lot is limited and may be pre-purchased here while supplies last.
Parking is available at a first-come, first served basis at the First Baptist Church’s Robinson St parking lot.

Limited street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood.
Be mindful of the road closures during the event:
Arthur Ashe Blvd (both northbound and southbound), between Park Ave and Hanover Ave
Kensington Ave (both eastbound and westbound), between Colonial Ave and AA Blvd
VMHC is open late from 6-9pm. Check out Commonwealth Explorers, the interactive, free play exhibit designed for kids 5 and younger. It's also perfect for cooling off or using the indoor restrooms!
While there will be food trucks, you can bring your own food & drinks.
Pack a picnic blanket or chairs to make viewing the video art project & pyrotechnics easier!
The pyrotechnics (or “fireworks”) happen between 9:20-9:30pm nightly!
Make sure to bring blankets or chairs. Please do not bring tents or umbrellas.
Dress for the weather. Most of the activities are outside!
Bathrooms are available inside the museum and outside via portable restroom trailers.
