If you are headed to Walt Disney World Theme Parks this year, you've heard about Lightning Lanes.

And, in my opinion, you NEED to have this upgrade if you are traveling with children 10 years old or younger. We upgrade to these passes on every trip, and having this ticket upgrade cuts your wait time for popular ride attractions in half or even more. If you have older kids, it's a lovely splurge, but they can probably wait a little better in lines than the little ones.

Bottom Line: My kids struggle to wait more than 20 minutes for a ride, so this is a must for us. The lines can be tight and crowded, and with the Disney heat, it can be exhausting for children.

What is Disney's Lighting Lane?

A Lightning Lane is a pass upgrade that lets you SKIP the regular, stand by line for rides and attractions. It's a paid line-skipping system on the most popular rides and attractions in Walt Disney World.

Basically, it's a faster line than the one the general public is waiting in. You select a time to visit a ride, and you're given an hour window to return instead of waiting in that line for an hour.

Lightning Lane = paid fast pass line for rides

For example: If Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has a 90-minute standby wait, a Lightning Lane could take you only 10–20 minutes to wait to get on the ride.

How to get a Lightning Lane?

You typically book one through the My Disney Experience app using Disney’s paid systems:

  1. Disney Genie+ (now often called Lightning Lane Multi Pass)

    • Pay a daily fee.

      • Prices fluctuate based on the specific park, ranging from $18 (Animal Kingdom) to $45 (Magic Kingdom) per person, per day.

      • Prices vary depending on time of year and crowd.

    • Book time slots for multiple rides throughout the day.

  2. Individual Lightning Lane (Single Pass)

    • Pay separately for very popular rides.

    • Example: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney's Hollywood Studios costs $20 to $28+ per person, per ride.

How it works:

  1. You choose a ride and a return time in the app.

  2. At that time, go to the Lightning Lane entrance.

  3. Scan your park ticket or MagicBand.

  4. Wait in a much shorter line than the regular, stand-by line (the "free" line).

For example: If Peter Pan's Flight has a 120-minute standby wait, a Lightning Lane could take you only 10-20 minutes to wait to get on the ride.

What is the estimated cost of Lightning Lanes for Families?

We paid between $15–$40 per person, per day.

We purchased the pass upgrade for every day we had a park ticket, and we added on all the single ride options too. This ticket upgrade had an additional cost of $1,000.00+ on our total ticket price.

Which Rides have a Lightning Lane?

All of the very popular rides have a Lightning Lane, and we used this feature for every ride possible.

Magic Kingdom Rides with Lightning Lanes:

*You will need to purchase Single Lightning Lanes for these rides:

1) TRON Lightcycle / Run (best for ages 7+)

2) Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (must be 38" tall to ride)

Epcot Rides with Lightning Lanes:

Animal Kingdom Rides and Attractions with Lightning Lanes:

Hollywood Studios Rides with Lightning Lanes:

PRO TIP: LIGHTNING LANES DO NOT EXPIRE!!!

While you have an hour return window, Disney knows things happen. Transportation could run late, another ride could be down, or maybe the kids are just melting down. I've never been turned away from a Lightning Lane before.

FINAL THOUGHTS: LIGHTNING LANES ARE A MUST!

Unless we were Florida residents with annual passes, I'd opt to upgrade to Multi-Lane Lightning Lanes on every pass, every time. It cuts wait times by half or more, allowing you to enjoy more aspects of the park: parades, character meals, exploring & taking in every moment.

I also always take advantage of the resort perks like the early mornings and extra magic at night. As a deluxe resort guest, you get to start enjoying the rides 30 minutes every day before the general public, and you also get up to 2 hours on certain days at certain parks.

We also arrived at the park 45minutes to 1hour before opening, ensuring that we made the most of the extra 30 minutes in the park resort guests get every day!

If you are wondering where you should stay on your next trip, here are my favorite resorts and all qualify as a Deluxe Resort!
