Art Class at the VMFA, Tots of Art

We love taking art classes at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). The VMFA offers classes and camps for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged children.

Tots of Art (14-30 months): This class has a morning option (10:30-11:30) and an afternoon option (4-5) on Thursdays. The afternoon class is a great option for teachers during the school year.

This class is much more structured than Artsy Infants, which can be challenging when its time to put all the toys up and start class. They have these amazing sensory bins and centers; they have lots of trucks and other things that go. The children love the free play at the beginning of class, so parents really have to get involved in the "clean up" before story time.

The teachers really know how toddlers think (and parents model the behavior too)- we sing a clean up song, everyone helps to put away the toys, and if your little one needs to hold a toy to focus on the story, he/she can. Then, toddlers participate in an interactive story time and tour of the museum. Each class concludes with art time (painting, creating sculptures or wind chimes, etc) and parachute time.
